Which is better - Professional or Tournament sized dominoes?

I get asked this a lot.  I am not kidding in the slightest.  The most common question that comes up is whether the best set is a Professional sized, a Tournament sized or a Jumbo sized.

First lets clarify that Tournament and Jumbo are the same size.  So we really only need to compare the professional to the Tournament.

What are the differences?

The primary difference is the physical size as you can see in the photo.  This photo has a Tournament sized Yellow domino with a spinner, a Tournament sized Black domino without a spinner and a Professional sized Blue domino with a spinner.

Height and Widdth:
The professional size are 1 inch by 2 inches in height and width
The tournament size are 1.1 inches by 2.2 inches in height and width
The thickness varies.  Dominoes with spinners are about .5 inches thick and the ones without spinners are a bit thinner at .35-.40 inches thick.

The other difference is the material they are made of.  The tournament sizes we carry are either acrylic (for the marbleized sets) or a plastic resin (for the solid color sets).  The professional sizes we have are primarily polyester and have a frosted look to them.  Many people prefer the solid color look over the frosted look.

So which one should I choose?

You probably already have a personal preference or are leaning toward one or the other.  If that is the case, go with your first instinct.   It is a personal decision after all.
If you are buying for a gift and do not know then the best bet is Tournament.  They seem to have a better feel in the hand as far as weight and size.  They also tend to stand on the sides better and the colors are solid as opposed to frosted.
